Guest Reviews

I had a guest review over on ffn today for my one shot, The End.

The was terribly sad and unnecessary. Wish I hadn’t read it. This could of ended so much better but your ending was super bad and dumb.

I can understand someone not liking a story, really. There are plenty out there that I don’t like as well but if that’s the case I cut my losses and leave the story rather than a review. Why? Over there there’s no way to tell, just by looking at the numbers, whether the reviews are good, bad or indifferent and I don’t want to add any more of my presence to a story I didn’t enjoy than I already have (clicking the link counts as visiting the story).

Since it’s a guest review I can’t reply back to them and ask what they didn’t like about it. Since it’s in my top 5 of the one shots I’ve written (along with The House Always Wins, Sookie’s Gift and Looney Tooney) that I actually enjoy reading time and time again I can’t understand.

Maybe it’s because I don’t WANT to understand?

In both the books and the show Sookie didn’t evolve, or if she did she quickly devolved. She did stupid shit that didn’t get her anything but more heartbreak. She didn’t get the guy, she didn’t get the HEA I feel she should have had.

Mind you, Eric didn’t really have an HEA either.

They never spoke again after he talked to her to get her to talk to the douche.

In my opinion, and others considering the reviews I got on here for The End, they needed that last conversation. They needed closure.

Eric needed to let her know that she HAD hurt him and that he was moving on with his life and he wanted her to do the same.

When I look at their relationship now I see toxic written all over it.

What would you call a relationship where the participants couldn’t communicate? Where they were either constantly arguing or having make up sex? A relationship that your family and friends didn’t approve of?

I’ve been there, done that and own the damn t-shirt store!

It was time Eric took back the reigns in his own life and got on with the business of living instead of mourning that which was never really his to begin with. sigh

It was time he took his balls back from both Sookie and Pam and started being a man again! smile

Would I have liked it if he had told her he would be there when she was ready to move on? Hell yeah but in my eyes it would have still been more of the same: Miscommunication and toxicity.

I know at least one person asked for a sequel of sorts and I am working on it. It’ll be part of a writing challenge (not allowed to say which one) so it’ll be a while before you see it but it is in the works.

YWBA controversy?

It has come to my attention through posts and personal conversation that some people think the awards are meant only for those who are regular posters or for The Authority itself or something. (I read this last night so I’m sure my memory is faulty, bear with me)

I see the awards as the community’s way of saying thank you to those who have awesome stories and do post on the regular or who are such fantabulous writers they get nominated even if they don’t update regularly. I can think of two off the top of my head who fall into the later category, too.

I probably have a different look on it too, though.
I write, beta, vote, encourage or give constructive criticism because it’s something I enjoy and am good at (although not the writing so much atm) so I figure I’ll pay it forward when and where I can. I vote on the awards to show those who seem to write for the same reasons that I feel they’re worthy of the recognition.
In my eyes the awards are not a popularity contest, at least they shouldn’t be. They are there to show the authors, betas and artists that they are appreciated. Their time and effort does not go unnoticed.
Even if there were no awards I would still be doing what it is that I do because I enjoy it.
As I told the person who initiated the conversation this morning I’ve been writing for three years this past February and beta for slightly less than that and this is the first time I’ve been nominated.
It’s an honour just TO be recognized, to have people appreciate what I have done and it will continue to be an honour whether I win, place or show or don’t place at all.
There are authors I anxiously await an update from and there are those whom I am glad to see an update from but they’ve slipped from my mind between postings. *shrug* I assume it’s like that for most folks though.
I’m going to give those who are in a snit over the awards a piece of advice which I have said many times on my blog…cross post. EVERYWHERE! Facebook, Twitter, tumblr, reddit…you can even cross post to your Link’d In account but I wouldn’t advise that one unless it’s actually job related.
Enter challenges like the Ultimate Blog Challenge I’ve done a couple of times on here. They have another one starting up on July 1 if you’re so inclined.
Reply to posts. You don’t have to do it a lot but let the author know you are reading, even if it’s a smiley face or a like, they like to know their stories are being read.  Offer to help or give constructive criticism. The more often you do these things the more likely it will be that you are recognized in some way.
The more you let others know you’re out there, not just your regular followers either, the more you will be recognized. Take Twitter for example. You can cross post from WordPress to Twitter and include @ and # so you can direct your post to a specific audience or person.
In conclusion, this will be the only thing I say on the topic. Why? Because I am wise enough to realize you can only please some of the people some of the time; there will always be malcontents.
I’m going to paraphrase Sookie from Saints and Sinners, “In order for there to be awesome people in this world there have to be skid marks too.” No, I don’t think any of you are skid marks but the theory still applies for karmic balance: in order for there to be awesome stories and authors there need to be some mediocre and poor ones too so we can appreciate the ones that ARE so good!
Okay, I’m stepping off my soap box now that I’ve said my peace.
Ciao.

Book Review: Waiting For Shadow

Yes, another book review!

Aside from that I’m thoroughly enjoying the LACK of cold and snow! I’m NOT enjoying the humidity!

Where have the seasons gone? I can remember have four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.

Now? Not so much. We jump right from winter into summer and back again with hardly any warning. Spring and Fall seem to be but a second thought when we look back at the year. Spring is still cold–winter coat cold only with rain instead of snow with few warm and sunny days and Fall isn’t much better.

Maybe I should say we go from winter to construction instead?

I can’t get on the highway by my place any more since they’re doing construction on the ramps and the highway itself.

I can’t go straight to where I want to go without hitting a few more construction zones sigh.

Grocery store? It used to be a 5 minute drive. Now it’s 30 minutes of hell and getting home is just as bad.

Coffee shop? Two construction zones.

Work? Three construction zones, soon to be four deep sigh.

The highway isn’t really an option since I have to travel ten minutes towards my ultimate destination to get to the next ramp, or ten minutes in the opposite direction sigh.

Why couldn’t the region get its head out of its butt many years ago and appoint the funds, which were supposed to go to road upkeep and water main maintenance already, then instead of waiting 50 years when it then has to all be done at the same freaking time?

Oktoberfest

Okay, I’m strange, I admit it, but I DESPISE Oktoberfest!

It’s hard enough to get around town during construction season (we only have two seasons any way:  No way am I going out in that sh*t and construction) without the added *bonus* of closed streets due to the oh-so-wonderful celebration that is really just another reason to drink. Like a University town NEEDS another reason for its inhabitants to imbibe booze of all descriptions!

Add to that the buses and buses and buses of tourists and you would think we were in Munich, Germany rather than Kitchener, Ontario, Canada!

There are some cool things that happen like the car show and the RIDE Program and the Thanksgiving Parade since Thanksgiving is always the second Monday in October.

The RIDE Program is sponsored by the Region, the Grand River Transit Authority, the Regional Police and a few others; this program makes the bus rides free after 10:00 or 11:00 pm, and extends the hours some routes run, so the revelers can get home safely, and keep others who are on the roads safer as well.  This should be EVERY weekend, not just the two weekends of Oktoberfest and New Years Eve!

I would love to do some of the things they come up with like the car show and most years David Wilcox performs at both Oktoberfest and Bluesfest in August. Unfortunately panic attacks and claustrophobia (what a combination!) prevent me from doing stuff in crowded spaces, especially if it’s hard to get to an exit or there is only one exit.

It’s not any of the above though that made me dislike it in the first place, they just enhance my experience (cue sarcasm cue card) ten fold! The real reason is that it brings out the worst in people. People are ruder than ever, you can find sick (and other bodily functions) in the bushes, their inhibitions go out the window and, well, I’m not proud to be a human when those things happen.

If I could I would be ANYWHERE other than here for these ten days and nights I would be.

Pet Peeves

Thank you kelpie for this idea.

For all you writers out there, and maybe not writers, but does  other people’s writing/speaking drives you bonkers?

Things like mixing up your and you’re or their, there and they’re.

I seen

I got

Shall I go on?

Sound off people, please :).  I like the interaction and I truly do want to know what some of your pet peeves are so I don’t commit them, lol.

Rant

I’ve had time to digest what I know about Dead Ever After, the thirteenth and final book in the Sookie Stackhouse series.

I haven’t read it since I was crazy enough to read the spoilers *sigh*.  There WILL be spoilers below here so if you haven’t read it and don’t want to see the spoilers stop here.

The image is from the net, no infringement intended, I just thought it was cool and I wanted a space filler, lol.

part of her now es

I am upset about the way the series ended though.

She ended up with Sam!  Sam of all people!

All through the series he was forever trying to tell her what to do and who she should have been dating!  They had ONE date in the first book!  That does NOT a relationship make!  Mind you, she and Eric never had ANY!  The one she thought they were going to have ended up being so she could meet a relative she never knew she had instead of a quiet dinner with just the two of them :(‘.

I have read that CH was writing a mystery (I think all her series are mysteries so no surprise there) and ended up with a romance.  She didn’t want the romance part, IMO, so she did everything she could, including butchering the final book, to make it possible for us to actually PREFER the fanfiction to her stories!

That’s right, I said it!  I prefer the fanfic to her books!  There are some wonderful authors writing for the fanfiction world who put a lot of thought and time, and continuity of plotlines, into their stories!

I’m not normally one to nitpick a story, mostly because I read for enjoyment rather than to find errors (I’m not an editor, why would I?).  I’m not the most observant of readers but when I can spot glaringly obvious errors I’m sure others did as well.  Even I picked up on the fact she couldn’t settle on a middle name for Bill.  Should it be Erasmus, as printed in the first book?  No, I think it’ll be Thomas instead.  There were others, many of them, many MANY errors and from what I hear she multiplied those errors in the final book *sobs quietly for a moment*.

I would like to thank her though, lol.  If it weren’t for Charlainne Harris and her vision of a human telepathic waitress from Backwater, Louisiana  in a vampire world I would have never discovered fanfiction!  😀

That’s all, back to your regularly scheduled reading.
